Using Your Fan and Air Conditioner in Carson City04/13/2016The weather is finally getting warmer and soon you may have to switch over to your air conditioner. Along with setting up your annual air conditioner service with the experts at Anderson Heating & A/C, there are a few other items you can do to remain comfy and save money this month. During the in-between season in Carson City, those far too few spring temps, you probably use ceiling fans to keep cozy. Did you know that operating your ceiling fan along with your air conditioner could not only keep you more cozy during the warmer days, but also save you on energy costs? In order to do that you have to make sure you’re utilizing ceiling fans and your air conditioning as you should be. Here’s a couple things to remember: Raise Your Thermostat This is where the cost savings can possibly come in. If you aren’t raising your thermostat you won’t be saving on your expenses. Raising your thermostat by even a couple degrees, in addition to running your ceiling fan, shouldn’t change your comfort level too much. For every degree you raise your temperature, you’re decreasing the length of the “on” cycle of your air conditioner. Adjust Air Direction Ceiling fans have a clockwise and counterclockwise setting to adjust dependent on the season. During the warmer months you’ll want to make sure the air is blowing down. You can stand underneath the fan to see if you feel a breeze. If you don’t, change the direction. Ceiling fans do not actually decrease the air temperature, but they make you feel cooler. It’s the wind chill effect. You’ll feel cooler than the temperature shown on the thermostat. Turn Off Fan When You’re Not There Treat your ceiling fan like you do lights, turn it off when leaving a room. If no one is in the room to feel the wind chill that a fan offers you’re wasting energy by running your fan. Don’t forget, a fan doesn’t actually cool your air, it just moves your air.
