Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in Carson City just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from performing as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t prep for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are steps you can take as a homeowner to help your air conditioner run as it should even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Inspect the area frequently to be sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have built up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, placing a cover over your air conditioner may end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, possibly meaning damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Carson City will most likely go up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the chance of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At Anderson Heating & A/C in Carson City, we are always available to inspect any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or purchasing a new system.
