Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

When winter comes and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, most of them can be traced back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not handled, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system breaks down.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself a bit of time to look through and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system may be more cost efficient.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises at the end of their life. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and anyone with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
