Furnace Troubleshooting: What to Do Before Calling for Furnace Repair

October 07, 2015

You can’t bank on the weather in Carson City, but one thing the team at Anderson Heating & A/C wants you to be able to count on is your heating and cooling system. Having a comfortable home isn’t a seasonal thing, it’s something you need all year. When your furnace is having problems you may think that means a furnace repair can be looming on the horizon. That may not be the case. If your furnace hasn’t been its usual, dependable self lately, there are a few things a homeowner can do before calling in the experts at Anderson Heating & A/C.

Check the Thermostat

We have received calls where we simply had to switch a thermostat from “cool” to “heat”. While changing the thermostat for the season, it’s easy for a homeowner to forget to flip the switch, telling your heating and cooling system what you would like it to do.

Something else to look at while you’re at the thermostat is the battery. Most digital thermostats have a low battery warning, but if it’s been some time since you’ve changed batteries it may be time for a change. It’s another painless fix that could save you a repair call.

Check the Filter

A dirty air filter can create all sorts of complications. Not only will a dirty filter cripple your system’s efficiency and decrease air flow, it could also cause a sudden breakdown. Changing the filter in your heating and cooling system is easy and it can play a major role in keeping your system functioning at its best.

Check the Switches

The first switch you’ll want to look at is the breaker for your furnace. It’s often the case that a problem can be as easy to fix as a tripped breaker or blown fuse.

Check the Vents

A typical misconception is that a homeowner should shut the vents in unused rooms. This could actually lead to a furnace repair down the line. Closed vents cause higher pressure inside your duct system and cause your system to work harder than it needs to.
